The God Who Mourns with Us

A friend’s grandmother just died.

Another friend just lost custody of their child.

Another lost their job.

Another’s son won’t speak to them, and they’ve yet to meet their grandchildren as a result.

The brokenness of our world is heavy.  This list could go on and on, these are simply some of the most recent conversations I’ve had.  How many prayers do we pray that go unanswered?

I don’t know why things happen the way they do.

But I know the One who knows.

I don’t know why specific bouts of pain happen at specific times to specific people, when God could prevent these things from happening.

But I do know that God feels pain along with us.

I know that God mourns this fallen world.

I know it wasn’t meant to be this way.

I know it won’t always be this way.

Jesus guaranteed that by defeating sin and death on the cross and with the empty tomb.

While we press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of us…  While we strain toward heaven, the place our citizenship lies…

God mourns with us.

God came to this earth in the flesh and experienced the pain and suffering that we go through.  He is able to relate with us.  He can say, “I’ve been there, I understand, I am with you.”

This is no small thing.

While he holds us and cries with us, he also reassures us, “Evil and pain will not have the last word.”
